Girl 6

Warner Bros. Records

Your film gave me newfound respect for the music.

Released at the request of film director and friend Spike Lee as the soundtrack to his movie Girl 6 – the album contains only one newly recorded song (the title track Girl 6) due to Prince not wishing to supply the label Warner Brothers any new material due to his dispute with them concerning the ownership of his music.

She Spoke 2 Me and Don’t Talk 2 Strangers although previously unreleased, both were respectively written in 1992 for the Love Symbol Album and Prince’s withdrawn contribution for the soundtrack for the 1994 movie, I’ll Do Anything. The album is also notable, bearing in mind he had since changed his name to Prince love symbol, is that Prince allowed Warner Brothers to market Girl 6 in the name of ‘Prince’. This was under the pretext that all of the songs, other than the title track was recorded prior to his name change in 1993.

Girl 6 – review

Allowing the ice thaw, albeit temporarily Prince let Warner Brothers release the Girl 6 soundtrack for his friend Spike Lee, for his new film Girl 6 about an out-of-work actress who gets herself back on her feet by taking up phone sex. So who other than Prince could provide a more suitable soundtrack. There is only one new song on Girl 6 due to the fact of the contractual dispute – credited to the NPG – the title track, the albums pulls together some of Prince’s good and lesser known funk; lots of which courtesy of Sign O’ The Times. There are contributions from The Family and Vanity 6 as well as some much cherished b-sides, headed up by the erogenous Erotic City. New and old tunes combine in perfect harmony, but shame about the film – although at least we owe it to Spike Lee for a less obvious Prince compilation and a great sound track.
