3121 Expanded Edition Prince album

Sony Legacy

album

Prince’s lone Las Vegas residency was brief but as bright as a fireball in the night sky.

The year 2006 was a landmark one, considering the dramatic ups and downs of Prince’s post-Warner career. Not only was Prince’s thirty-first studio album 3121 only his fourth and final album to reach number in the US during his lifetime (being his first US chart-topping record since 1989’s Batman), it was the first of his career to debut at number one on the Billboard chart. 3121 was certified Gold in June 2006 with sales of 500,000.

Following the success of Musicology, which reached number 3 on the Billboard chart in 2004 and became his first original album to enter the US top ten since leaving Warner Bros in 1996, Prince built on his newfound momentum with 3121. While Musicology had benefited from its inclusion in the ticket price of the accompanying tour, 3121 was boosted by combination of high-profile events throughout 2006 and happy timing.

The first of these was a performance on NBC on 4 February. Then on the 15th, despite not being nominated, Prince made a surprise appearance at the Brit Awards, publicly reuniting with Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin of The Revolution, their first live show together since 1986. The appearance showcasing singles of the upcoming album alongside hits from Purple Rain served to test the waters for a planned London residency in 2007. March 2006 saw the release of the studio album 3121 and, that August, his former label Warner Bros Records put out his second greatest hits compilation, Ultimate. A second promotional TV appearance (ABC’s concert series) happened on 15 June, and then another award show slot on the 27th. Finally, on 14 November Prince was back in London for his induction into the UK Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The launch of his Las Vegas concert residency Per4orming Live @ 3121 coincided with his Hall of Fame induction. It opened at the Rio Hotel & Casino on 10 November 2006 and continued until the following April. During February 2007, Prince famously staged the Halftime Show at Super Bowl XLI. After nearly two decades in being unable to break into the US top ten, Prince was finally back in winning form. His long-fought ambition to becoming a commercially successful independent artist had finally been realised.

Prince’s Las Vegas residency was centred around a fully themed 800-capacity venue named Club 3121. Typically for Prince, the residency had no scheduled showtime and took to the stage, usually after midnight, and played for as long as he wished. It was a highly lucrative stint, with the off-Strip venue willing to pay handsomely to secure Prince. He struck a similar arrangement to bring Club 3121 to LA’s Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel which became a celebrity hotspot for its month-long run in June 2007. The format was upscaled for a summer residency in London, holding court at the 23,000-capacity O2 Arena for a record-breaking run of 21 consecutive sold-out shows, entitled The Earth Tour.

3121 Expanded Edition was released by The Prince Estate in partnership with Sony Legacy Recordings to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of 3121 and Prince’s career-defining year, and to celebrate his iconic Las Vegas residency. The package consists of two CDs (three LPs) and one Blu-ray. Disc 1 contains the remastered original album.

3121 Expanded Edition compiles ten previously unreleased tracks, which comprise disc 2. Time Of Ur Life was recorded in 2005, possibly for a new project Prince was then working on with Morris Day. The Streets Of Panama is the first of two songs in this compilation which were previously considered for 3121 back in 2005. The track was recorded at Paisley Park Studios on 21 October 2004 on the same day as Glass Cutter and The Morning After. Orchestration by Clare Fischer was added at Capitol Studios in Hollywood in June 2005. Elixer is second outtake originally intended for 3121, this original version recorded at his home studio in LA in 2005 has Prince solo on piano but was reworked in 2006 with Bria Valente in lead vocals to become the title track of her debut album that accompanied LotusFlow3r and MPLSound in 2009.

Another Girl is one of a handful of song’s Prince wrote about his second wife Manuela Testolini. A promotional video for the song was also created for which she also directed. Glass Cutter was previously available on NPG Music Club as an MP3 download on 5 April 2005, titled Glasscutter. Both Glass Cutter and U’re Such A Tease were on a 2007 sequence of LotusFlow3r album but before subsequently dropped from the final configuration. The final track Girls In The Band dates from 2008 and was recorded with no specific project in mind.

Prince performed more than fifty shows at Club 3121. The performance on 20 January 2007 was professionally filmed but remained unreleased. For 3121 Expanded Edition, the show’s footage was restored and digitally upgraded and is presented on Blu-ray, and the audio was newly remastered. The soundboard recording from this show is given a standalone release as limited edition for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event on 27 November 2026. Titled 3121 Las Vegas Live this is released as a triple-LP set pressed on 140g Curaçao blue vinyl (9,400 units) and a double-CD edition (2,700 units).

This remains an evolving page and more information will be added as it becomes available.
