Child Of The Sun

Edel

Step back, give a girl some room.

Mayte Jannell Garcia when aged just 16 was first introduced to Prince in August 1990 at a concert in Mannheim Germany where Prince was performing the Nude Tour. Her mother had shot an audition tape of Mayte dancing and managed to slip it to Kirk Johnson in a chance meeting just before the show. Prince watched it and the two kept in touch, he hired her for the Diamonds And Pearls Tour two years later, as her first job as a professional dancer. Her relationship with Prince inspired the entire backstory to the Love Symbol Album and the home video 3 Chains O’ Gold. The couple married on Valentine’s Day 1996, Prince composing an instrumental album Kamasutra for the occasion.

Being also able to sing, Prince wrote her a solo album Child Of The Sun, as well as wrote and performed the instruments on every song (excepting House Of Brick (Brick House) his cover of the Commodores) and was recorded between 1993 and 1994 at Paisley Park Studios. Its lead single, The Most Beautiful Boy In The World preceded the release of the album by over a year, it is a re-working of Prince’s first UK chart-topping single The Most Beautiful Girl In The World that was released on 9 February 1994. Prince is credited for his involvement, under the name Prince love symbol. Due to his ongoing dispute with Warner Bros. Child Of The Sun was released in Europe only and distributed by the German publishing company Edel – Warner denying its release in the US.

Prince and Mayte divorced amicably in 2000 – she afterwards engaged to Tommy Lee, drummer of Mötley Crüe, until 2003. In 2017, she published an autobiography about her life with Prince, titled The Most Beautiful.

Child Of The Sun – review

By the middle of the 1990s, a clear pattern had emerged on the criteria of Prince’s selection of his protegees – they were invariably girlfriends. Mayte however, became his wife in 1996, and in his typical fashion he set to work to write her a debut album. The album the couple competed, Child Of The Sun, is remarkable. Opening with the title track, a dance groove which slides into In Your Gracious Name, they maintain the quality that will continue throughout the entire album, and its immense drive to boot. Prince never did a half-hearted effort, and as side projects go, Child Of The Sun is a standard bearer. It’s lead single is If Eye Love U 2night, but it’s the next tracks that are its gems: The Rhythm Of Your Heart and the mighty Ain’t No Place Like U – supplying one of Prince’s most impressive guitar solos of his career. This is followed by his fantastic version of House Of Brick (Brick House) a cover of the Commodores’ Brick House. The next track slows things down with Love’s No Fun, and picks up again with the wild Baby Dont Care. In However Much U Want Prince duets on what is the albums standout track and a powerhouse at that. Matye’s gives provides perhaps the listener a little too much information in Mo Better “when it’s wetter”, her intimate and fun love letter to her obviously pleasing marriage to Prince. This is followed by her rendition of The Most Beautiful Boy In The World, another reworking of his first ever UK #1 single. That track closes what is a mesmerising and solid release from Prince’s newly formed label NPG Records. Of course, Mayte was far more than a mere project, she was an admired member of the NPG and also a woman who had bagged her prince. With Child Of The Sun she deserved to have the world at her fingertips.
