I’m in the mood for some pastry.

Breakfast Can Wait was track Prince recorded at Paisley Park Studios in December 2012, and was initially offered as a digital download from his official website 3rdeyegirl.com, on 5 February 2013.

The song got its commercial release on 3 September 2013 when rolled out to digital streaming services iTunes and Amazon. Peaking on the Billboard R&B chart at number 26, its traction saw Breakfast Can Wait developed into an EP titled The Breakfast Experience and, from 24 October that year was likewise commercially available. This digital EP included four additional remixes of the track by Joshua Welton. Although intended to be a stand-alone release, owing to its chart success, in September 2014 the original track was included into the configuration and released on Prince’s thirty-seventh studio album Art Official Age.

The artwork of The Breakfast Experience shows Prince’s comic side, in that it pictures Dave Chappelle dressed as Prince and holding a plate of pancakes in a 2004 sketch from the comedian’s show True Hollywood Stories in which Chappelle recounted a true life encounter with Prince in 1985. The story goes Prince had invited Chappelle to his house, listened to music, played basketball and then cooked Chappelle some pancakes. Prince prided himself on the quality of his pancakes, which he often cooked for guests and bandmates at Paisley Park. The promo video for the single continues the comedic tone. Its 18-year-old director playfully Danielle Leigh Curiel impersonates Prince. In 2015, she and her sister Charli, as Curly Fryz, would put backing vocals to Like A Mac for HITNRUN Phase One.

The Breakfast Experience EP single review

After quite a drought, not seeing much new music from Prince post his self-imposed banishment from the studio in 2010, focussing his energy on touring instead. 2010 to 2013 witnessed only the occasional internet single, each one triggering excitement a bigger project was on the way. Breakfast Can Wait popped out with little fanfare.

The track sets a playful tone, a female springing out of bed only to cook herself breakfast rather than remain under the sheets with Prince who is hot with other intentions for the morning. Breakfast Can Wait was developed into four remixes crafted by newcomer Joshua Welton. Espresso is the best of them. Prince was evidently pleased with the result, having Welton to also produce his next studio album Art Official Age. That was a big deal, the first human since 1979 to share credit for studio production for a Prince LP.

The Breakfast Experience EP is rated 3.5 out of 5 by Goldies Parade.
