Screwdriver was released on all digital platforms by Swiss label Purple Music one day prior to the launch of 20pr1nc3.com and 3rdEyeGirl.com where the song was available for purchase, on 4 February 2013. It was released by Purple Music, an independent Swiss-based music publisher.

Screwdriver is the first release by Prince with his all-female backing band 3rdEyeGirl, and was possibly intended to appear on their debut album Plectrumelectrum however fell out of favour and was omitted from the track list in its final configurations. The song was however re-released on 12 December 2015, included in the tracklist of the album HITNRUN Phase Two.
