Fallinlove2nite Prince single
Epic Records
singleFallinlove2nite was recorded at Paisley Park Studios in December 2013 by Prince especially for his first TV cameo appearance since 1997 (when special guest on Muppets Tonight), in an episode of the Fox sitcom New Girl. The uptempo song features the show’s co-star Zooey Deschanel.
Anything beautiful is worth getting hurt for.
Being an avid fan of the show, Prince requested to appear in a cameo role as himself – on the proviso that the party scene in that same episode would not involve a Kardashian. Filmed on 12 December 2013, Prince features throughout much of episode 14 of season 3. In the episode, titled ‘Prince’, he imparts relationship advice to characters Jess (played by Deschanel), who gets an invite to a party at Prince’s LA house by way of an apology after being nearly ran over by his car, and Nick (Jake Johnson) who is uninvited and attempts to crash the same party. Prince performs Fallinlove2nite at the party. The setting was inspired by the VIP laden house parties he hosted whilst renting in LA between 2005 and 2009. The episode, watched by 26 million, was aired on the Fox network on 2 February 2014 right after the Super Bowl, TVs most coveted slot.
The digital single Fallinlove2nite followed on 17 March released by Epic Records across all leading platforms, with Deschanel singing the chorus. Not only an actress, Deschanel is an accomplished singer having done the theme song for the show as well as released three albums as part of the duo She & Him, formed in 2006. In September 2015 the track was rereleased, included in the configuration of the album HITNRUN Phase One, albeit with Deschanel’s vocals removed from that version. Owing to the death of long term collaborator Clare Fischer in 2012, Fallinlove2nite was also the first track Prince had anyone else work the orchestral arrangement for his songs. This task fell to Adi Yeshaya of STRINGenius who was asked to study Fischer’s work and create an arrangement in his style.
Fallinlove2nite is noteworthy as being Prince’s second only single to give joint credit to another performer (the first being Angie Stone with U Make My Sun Shine in 2001). The single also marks Prince’s second release under Michael Jackson’s former label Epic Records.

Fallinlove2nite single review
Prince was always somewhat stingy with the creative allowance he granted collaborators. To Prince, collaborators were more hired participants awarded at best backing vocals, a supporting role. The case in point here is Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, perhaps Sheena Easton received the best crack of the whip but you won’t need many fingers to count them, although the kickback is surely bragging rights at being credited on a Prince record. Zooey Deschanel is one of those. Her part is the chorus, one line repeated. In return, Prince bagged a cameo in his fav TV show New Girl, a specially written episode loosely accommodating the theme of Fallinlove2nite. This is an up-tempo dance-fused track, with Prince’s voice cranked up as Camille for the 2010s. But Deschanel’s appearance on the record did not survive its re-release in 2015 on HITNRUN Phase Two, her vocals excluded. Bragging privilege has its limits.
Fallinlove2nite is rated 3 out of 5 by Goldies Parade.
