Prince was at a crossroads in 1985 following his runaway success with Purple Rain, which shot him to global stardom in 1984. The dilemma he faced was how to follow that up, which not just secured him a best-selling album but put him top of the movie box office and singles chart in a triple chart feat only previously been achieved by The Beatles in 1964 with A Hard Days Night. Prince recorded its follow-up album while on the road for the 100 date Purple Rain Tour. Astonishingly, even before that promotional tour played its final show production on Around The World In A Day was already complete. Around The World In A Day became Prince’s the second album billed with The Revolution, though unlike Purple Rain the band’s involvement is diminished and feature in only three of the new tracks. It was also crucially the inaugural release release under Prince’s newly established label Paisley Park Records. Although set up as a joint venture with Warner Bros Records, Prince was granted full autonomy with this label and sign to it acts of his choosing.
Unlike the unabashed rawness of its predecessor, Around The World In A Day took an entirely different route. Its psychedelic sound met mixed reactions from the music press when the album came out on 22 April 1985, barely two weeks after the closing show of Purple Rain Tour. Looking to push boundaries in a new artistic direction, whilst the music was not what critics expected, the LP contained the radio friendly Raspberry Beret which climbed to second place in the Billboard Hot 100 – being famously denied the top spot by Duran Duran’s View To A Kill. The hit single helped Around The World In A Day head all the way to the top of the album charts on 6 June and sat held that position for three weeks. Yet bearing in mind Purple Rain occupied the number one spot for 24 weeks, execs at Warner were especially unhappy when Prince, burned out by Purple Rain Tour, bucked expectations by choosing not to support Around The World In A Day with a world tour. In fact, Prince refused to tour again until his 1986 album Parade. Today, Around The World In A Day is highly revered by Prince’s fans.
In celebration of the album’s 40th anniversary, Around The World In A Day Deluxe Edition was produced by The Prince Estate in partnership with Warner Records, issued in two formats as 2xCD and 3xLP. The vinyl release is presented on 140g vinyl. A Dolby ATMOS version was also available on streaming platforms. Disc 1 in the physical formats comprise the remastered original album, mixed by Prince’s former studio engineer Chris James and audio mastering by Bernie Grundman, and includes the extended version of America. The companion disc reissues ten cuts of the singles and their B-sides in their various 7” and 12” mixes as released in 1985 in promotion of the original album. Single disc Standard versions were also available comprising the remastered original album, excluding America extended version bonus track.
Also included on the second disc are the two versions of 4 The Tears In Your Eyes. The first created version of the track was recorded by Prince and The Revolution on 31 January 1985 for inclusion on the We Are The World album for USA For Africa famine relief charity, following Prince’s controversial decision against participating in the iconic benefit single’s star-studded recording on the 28th. The saga led Prince to writing Hello in response to the negative press and issued the track as B-side for Raspberry Beret on 10 July 1985. His second version of 4 The Tears In Your Eyes is an acoustic rendition laid down 4 June for the accompanying video for broadcast during the Live Aid concert in Philadelphia on 13 July. This version only received commercial release in September 1993 on Prince’s greatest hits compilation The Hits/The B-Sides. Unbeknownst then, it would be the final release by Paisley Park Records before the label’s closure in February 1994.
On its release, Around The World In A Day Deluxe Edition sparked criticism from fans, that in light of previous Super Deluxe packages for 1999 and Sign O’ The Times and Diamonds And Pearls, not only was Around The World In A Day Deluxe Edition pared down to Deluxe Edition, unlike 2019s Purple Rain Deluxe Edition which included era outtakes, the 2025 set offered simply a straightforward remaster of the main album and supporting singles. This lack of previously unavailable content resulted in the set’s poor charting, landing it at 176 in the Billboard 200, it also barely broke into the UK top 100.

Around The World In A Day Deluxe Edition album review
As releases go, Around The World In A Day Deluxe landed amid a cloud of controversy. Following two full years without word of a physical release from The Prince Estate out popped this Deluxe Edition, celebrating the 40th year of the release of the original 1985 album. The same milestone anniversary was missed with Purple Rain in 2024, some will say inexcusably and they would be right. What makes Around The World In A Day stand out is that this is the first release under the banner of Deluxe not to contain anything that wasn’t already available forty years before. The package reissues the original LP (a firm favourite among the fanbase) along with its four supporting singles in both 7 and 12″ cuts. Deluxe Editions bring together the singles in all their extended versions and B-sides into one place, as not all of them made it to CD in later years. Yet the Estate’s reasoning for not opening the vault in this instance can only be rationalised by the lack of a delineated creative period between Around The World In A Day and Parade, that most of the songs written during its session in the latter half of 1984 ended up either on the main album, its singles, or his The Family side project and Romance 1600. The year was not a particularly fertile one for outtakes particularly in light of 1986, which outputted a horde of songs for a raft of projects, many of which were published as a 9-disc Super Deluxe in 2020.
The reason Around The World In A Day Deluxe may give a cause for celebration is two-fold. Firstly, it means a release schedule has finally begun – albeit meanly as not to include anything from the vault. And so, if there is ever to put a positive spin on this is that it brings hope in the future. It does appear that no matter what The Estate do could thaw the (self-inflicted) apprehension it has from the fanbase other than to hand over the keys to Iron Mountain itself. Few artists have left so much unreleased material, indeed enough to outgrow a substantial basement vault, so to not do anything with the contents of that vault and produce a tracklist that many have dismissed as ‘lazy’, coupled also with silly factual slipups on their socials, the muddle heaps yet more fuel on the concerns that the Estate does not appear to possess a fan-level understanding of Prince’s music. Secondly, what the Deluxe brings is remastered sound and a proper preservation of what represent among Prince’s best B-sides, pleasingly presented. While the audio is greatly improved – and particularly so in Pop Life and America [12″ Version] – and sharp, levelling is inconsistent between some 7″ and 12″ cuts. This aside, the Estate need to take heed from the album’s artwork and engage more blue sky thinking. No one can argue that their mission is to build on, celebrate and commercialise Prince’s legacy. But this will only be achieved with releases that have more bang (evidenced in the collection’s chart peak of 176 in the Billboard 200). What it has achieved is a whole new appreciation for this incredible album.
