Sexy MF [video single] Prince video
Warner Music Vision
videoU, U and U, get in the car.
Full length video promo single of the track Sexy MF from Prince and the New Power Generation’s second record, Love Symbol Album in support of its first single.
Filmed in the underground garage at Paisley Park Studios during a three day shooting session starting 20 March 1992, Sexy MF was completed just ten days prior to Prince and the NPG playing the opening concert of their Diamonds And Pearls Tour in Tokyo on 3 April 1992.
The cast features Prince and band members of the NPG – predominately its hip hop trio “Game Boyz”; Tony Mosley, Damon Dickson and Kirk Johnson (known in the band as TDK). Cast in the role as lead female character was Dynasty actress Troy Beyer. It was rumoured she and Prince were dating at the time. In December 1992, Beyer hosted Prince’s TV special The Ryde Dyvine.
The film features Prince’s banana-yellow 1991 2-door BMW 850i E31, pulling into the garage doubling as an underground gambling den. He, Dickson and Johnson step out of the car and call three women (Beyer, Robin Power and Tracy Hudson) to leave with them – Prince’s attention falling on Beyer. He drives her to a hotel room and the seduction of the titular Sexy MF begins. In the film, which is developed into an eight minute short movie incorporating an opening dialogue, Dickson is seen holding an advertisement for the then upcoming album by Chic.
Sexy MF was commercially released on VHS as a video single on 16 June 1992, coinciding with Prince’s stint at London’s Earls Court Arena performing the tour when he had set the record for the most concurrent shows staged at that venue. As a home video single, its sales were certified Gold by RIAA on 3 February 1993. Completely unsuited for radio, the single it supported charted at 66 in the US Hot 100, but, aided by its timing with the tour, Sexy MF peaked at number 4 in the UK. The previous summer the BMW was also featured in the video for Gangster Glam and was subsequently sprayed gold for use as Prince’s personal car.
Each time Prince had his home painted he always bought a BMW in the matching colour. His home on Galpin Blvd was indeed yellow in 1992, and in 1996 upon marring Mayte he had it painted white. Beyer and Prince remained friends and in 2010 she presented him his BET Lifetime Achievement award.
Synopsis
Bereft of draws for the evening, Tony M, Damon and Kirk – along with Prince – crash the NPG’s weekly card party in typical gangster-glam fashion. Prince, spotting three cuties that look to be a challenge, hops out of his custom-built, chiquita-yellow BMW and spits the invitation, “U, U and U get in the car!” But Levi ain’t having it and starts cussin’ out these party crashers. That’s when the funk starts!
Sexy MF – with lyrics containing some of Prince’s raunchiest propositions yet – kicks in with a flash-forward sequence in which Prince and Tony M show the girls their future. That’s is, if they choose to go for “the ride!”
Special guest Troy Beyer goes 4 “the ride” in the freaked-out, funk-filled extravaganza.
DIG IT, THEN TELL A FRIEND.
