Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas is footage capturing the final show of Prince’s world tour the One Nite Alone… Tour filmed at the Theatre for the Performing Arts of the Aladdin Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas on 15 December 2002. The show followed the Japan leg of the tour, which was played in Nagoya on 29 November – the day tickets for the Las Vegas closer went on sale.
Performed to an audience of 7,000, the DVD does not capture the full concert, Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas being concentrated on the middle portion of that show, omitting also Prince’s piano set near the end. Later that night, Prince performed an after show at Studio 54, MGM Grand, with Cyndi Lauper guesting.
To promote his upcoming concert Prince appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, with band to perform The Everlasting Now. The programme was broadcast on NBC on 13 December 2002.
Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas was shot using a handheld camera, and despite being issued on DVD the picture quality is quite grainy due to the low lighting. The DVD’s sole special feature is a 40-second commercial for the NPG Music Club. Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas contains one previously unreleased song U Want Me, which dates from 2002 and is performed as part of a medley with Strollin’. The concert features a guest appearance by Nikka Costa performing her song Push & Pull as a duet with Prince. The pair first met in 2001 when Prince invited her to performed at Prince: A Celebration at Paisley Park. In 2004, Costa sent Prince lyrics to a song titled Silver Tongue, to which Prince added music and released on NPG Music Club that year.
A special screening of the concert footage was staged on 18 August 2003 at BB King’s Blues Club at Universal City Plaza, California, the evening prior to the DVDs commercial release. Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas charted at number 2 on Billboard’s music video chart. It would become the final physical format video release issued in Prince’s lifetime.
2020 reissue
On 29 May 2020, Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas was reissued by Sony Legacy as part of the box-set Up All Nite With Prince: The One Nite Alone Collection packaging together the DVD and the three CD releases from that tour.
