Sony Legacy

Party like it’s 1999

Ultimate Rave is a three-disk box set comprising CD reissues of two of Prince’s studio albums issued at the turn of the Millennium and when under the name of Prince love symbol – 1999s Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic album and its later remix companion Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic. The third disk is a DVD re-release of the concert performed by Prince and special guests, recorded at Paisley Park and televised on New Year’s Eve 1999, Rave Un2 the Year 2000. The collection does not contain any previously unreleased or extra tracks and recordings but is beautifully repackaged as one boxset. See original releases for reviews and further details.

Ultimate Rave – review

Rave Un2/In2 The Joy Fantastic are much overlooked Prince albums, no doubt like many, it took their reissue under Ultimate Rave to rediscover them again myself. I forgot how they were so damn funky and fresh they deserved far more frequent listening over the intervening years, still packing a punch some twenty years later – can it really be so long. Not ever being much a fan of his millennial catalogue, Ultimate Rave has me re-evaluating that entirely. I won’t go in to any individual review of the albums, because you will find them on Rave Un2 and Rave In2’s own pages, so what about the reissue? – it is amazing what a repackaging can do. These may not be re-masters but the packaging is masterful – and beautiful to boot. Following on very much the packaging of the original Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic with Prince in light-catching electric blue cat-suit, Ultimate Rave not only lovingly matches and even betters the originals quality. There is also a beautifully put together booklet and that’s not all – bundled within is the long deleted concert DVD Rave Un2 The Year 2000. Ultimate Rave is a wonderful return to the joy fantastic, which if anything would rebuild your appreciation of his catalogue of ‘99.
