In May 2021, The Prince Estate struck up perhaps its most surprising collaboration, a license deal with Paris Saint-Germain football club as part of their tribute to Prince named ‘Prince of the Parc’ and the launch of its Prince-inspired street wear range in their stores. The club announced on 7 May 2021 also the release of an exclusive limited 7inch purple vinyl edition of the single Partyman from Prince’s 1989 album Batman, produced in partnership with NPG Records and Warner Records.
The A-side of the record features the reissue of the original single edit of Partyman, recorded at Paisley Park Studios in March 1989. Its B-side contains a previously unreleased version of The Time’s Cool, recorded live on 1 June 2014 during the performance by Prince and his backing band 3rdEyeGirl at Le Zenith in Paris as part of their Hit And Run Tour – the second show that night and what became his final concert in the French capital. Cool forms the closing part of a longer 21-minute medley named CRAZY2COOL, which opened that show and comprised the hits Let’s Go Crazy, Take Me With U, Raspberry Beret, U Got The Look and Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough and Cool. Video footage of the performance of the full medley was published on The Prince Estate’s YouTube account on 7 May, as a high definition, professionally shot recording, also issued for the occasion.
The single was available exclusively from the club’s website psg.fr from 7 May and in their Megastore on Champs-Elysées from 24 May 2021. Prince previously performed at the club’s ground, the Parc des Princes stadium on 16 June 1990 during Nude Tour, played to 60,000 that night it was the largest attended show in that tour. That show, Prince performed both Partyman and Batdance. The cover photo used on the 2021 release was the same image, a shot by Jeff Katz, used in promotion of that 1990 Paris show.

Partyman single review
Prince and football (soccer to our US readers) is not a paring that would immediately jump to mind. Imagine the surprise when a licensing deal was announced between The Prince Estate and a Paris football club under the tenuous excuse Prince played at the grounds in 1990, and one of the songs he performed in that concert was Partyman. Does that mean every venue Prince ever played can seek an exclusivity release?
2021 witnessed two very questionable releases in the name of Prince’s legacy: the other, was a line of premium Prince branded make-up with Urban Decay in stores that August. Could these deals set a precedent for worse? This aside, the unlocking of a Batman era release considering the complexities of the license of the movie, a challenge even Prince’s greatest hits packages could not surmount, offers a glimmer of good fortune, that just maybe there could be more Batman related releases to look forward to down the line.
