Warner Brothers announces the release of super deluxe re-master of Prince’s fifth studio album 1999 will be due this November. The success of 2017’s Purple Rain Deluxe sees the label’s next release upgraded to Super Deluxe Edition and is available this November. What’s in it?

The 1999 remaster will be available both in CD and vinyl formats, each comprising 5 CDs and 10LPs respectively and housing a whopping 65 songs in total, plus a DVD of previously unreleased concert footage.

In addition to the 2019 re-mastering of the original album, the 1999 Super Deluxe Edition contains no fewer than 35 previously unreleased tracks. Those of most interest will sit on disks 3 and 4: two volumes fresh from the vault showcasing 23 out-takes and unused tracks written and produced by Prince between November 1981 and April 1982 (disk 3) and April 1982 and January 1983 (disk 4), the era he created his breakthrough and first double album 1999. The out-takes include the full unedited version of Delirious (the one in the original album is actually an edit) and there is Possessed too – promised to be a wonderfully different version of which was issued in the Purple Rain Deluxe Edition. Moonbeam Levels gets the remastered treatment also. The omission of Prince’s original 1983 version of Extraloveable, however, has drawn criticism from the fan community.

Continuing in the vein of Purple Rain Deluxe, disk 2 will also comprise of remastered seven-inch cuts and B-Sides promoting the original release.

Disk 5 will be an audio recording of a concert Prince performed at midnight on 30 November 1982 in Detroit, during his 1999 Tour. The accompanying DVD (disk 6) contains footage (no rough recording but professionally shot with multiple cameras) of the show Prince performed at The Houston Summit, 29 December 1982 for the same tour.

The CDs in the Super Deluxe Edition, to be released on 29 November, is presented in a beautiful gatefold sleeve and will be accompanied with a 48-page booklet and sleeve notes contributed by David Fricke, Duff McKagan, Andrea Swensson and Duane Tudahl. Although the price for the CD box-set will set fans back £64.99 and the vinyl release £186.99, for budgets unable to stretch to that, the Super Deluxe Editions will also be offered as a 2 disk Deluxe Edition containing the remaster and disk 2’s B-Sides and edits.

And as with all releases of late, where the current release is answered tit-for-tat by the announcement of the next, Warner’s 15 September news is off the back of Sony Legacy’s impressive reissue of rarities Emancipation, Chaos & Disorder and ultra rare The Versace Experience on the 13th. It’s meant for a busy autumn for Prince fans, the 1999 Super Deluxe Edition follows the publication of the part of the memoir Prince had been writing himself and completed just prior to his death in 2016. The memoir The Beautiful Ones is due on 29 October.

It is also confirmed that Super Deluxe Editions of other albums will follow in the near future.
