As Prince completes the first two dates of his sold out Piano & A Microphone tour at Melbourne’s Arts Centre, Australia, reaction is euphoric.

Gone are the doubts that Prince’s solo performance with just a piano could sustain 80 minute shows, as Prince twice nightly delivers delightfully open, often insightful, and powerful performances. The Melbourne press reviewed the show as “breathtaking”.

Following its preview at Paisley Park the previous month the tour was promised to be an intimate affair from the outset but it received even greater potency on its opening night as Prince gave tribute to Denise Matthews, his former girlfriend who fronted also the band Vanity 6 in the early 1980s who died earlier that day following a long battle with kidney failure, she was 57. “I’m trying to stay focused, it’s a little heavy for me tonight.” Prince revealed and dedicated much of the show to her. The couple appeared together on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine in 1983.

Where top price tickets soared to $970 and averaged $400, this experience proved cost was no concern for the lucky fans that was present. There were two shows each night over 16 and 17 February and is the format for the remainder of the tour. Backed only with a huge screen pumping out intoxicating psychedelic patterns throughout his set list for the first date’s shows was as follows:
