Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition confirmed

Following months of speculation, to great excitement The Prince Estate has confirmed the long-awaited Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition, which will drop on 27 October.

The box set will be issued in both CD and vinyl formats: the CD edition housing 7 discs and one Blu-ray, and the vinyl format comprising 12 LPs and Blu-ray. The super deluxe is a remastering of the original 1991 album and will include 15 single mixes and B-sides, and 33 previously unreleased studio tracks and alternative versions from the vault.

The Blu-ray comprises footage of the tour preview show Prince and the NPG performed at the Glam Slam nightclub in Minneapolis on 11 January 1992 and will also be issued in audio only version spanning two CDs. Also included is the 20 July 1991 show the band performed for the opening of the Special Olympics which was broadcast that following day. The Diamonds And Pearls Video Collection first released on VHS in 1993 is also cleaned up and presented for the first time on Blu-ray will accompany the release.

The Super Deluxe set will be issued in a slip sleeve 12-inch box case just like the striking package for Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition of 2020. Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe will likewise feature a companion hardcover book, featuring a foreword by Chuck D and previously unpublished photos by Randee St Nicholas. This 120-page book also contains essays by Andrew Swensson, the Estate’s newly appointed archivist and author Duane Tudahl, music critic Jason Draper, and contributions from Celebration 2023 panellist De Angela Duff and social media personality KaNisa Williams. A poster of the original lyric sheet is also included.

The one and only daddy pop

Work on the set is understood to have begun as long ago as 2020 under the previous management of the Estate, when intended to coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of the release of the original album in October 2021. This and the planned Netflix documentary became casualties owing to the uncertainties surrounding the approaching settlement of Prince’s probate, which after a six years of court hearings concluded in July 2022, when the Estate’s running passed to new management. Unhappy with the quality and condition of the audio, the release was further delayed while the new Estate rectified the issues and got its feet under the table.

Contrary to previous speculation, the release does not include the reissue of Love Symbol Album which will likely receive a dedicated release at some near point.
