In what lasted little more than a year with Prince at the helm of his first Twitter account @3RDEYEGIRL, which became the mouthpiece for all Prince’s announcements, both @3RDEYEGIRL and @NPGOFFICIAL as well as his Facebook and Instagram pages have been closed down all of a sudden– and in typical Prince fashion. This may mean he is working on another project now that Plectrumelectrum is out, or simply due to social media taking its toll. There is speculation the move is probably linked to the Massey Hall fiasco where hundreds of fans flocked to the venue in Toronto on the basis of a tweet from @3RDEYEGIRL: “4th day of November, we need a purple high: OTNOROT CALLING …” being construed that Prince (who was in New York at the time) was going to perform there that evening for a surprise show. That tweet was quickly deleted. Earlier his Q&A on Facebook on 30 September saw him answer only one out of the 4,000 questioned posted.

The closures do not mean that Prince is entirely offline, his website remains live. However this departure from social media, which saw him gather 175k followers on Twitter, his fans now face at least a temporary end to official announcements in that medium. Prince’s final tweet celebrated the vinyl release of Plectrumelectrum.
