Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition has earned Prince a staggering 40th nomination by the Grammy Awards. The landmark nine-disk release, arguably the best in Prince’s vast catalogue, makes the coveted shortlist announced on 23 November, in the category of Best Historical Album.
The 2020 reissue, The Prince Estate’s second super deluxe release, containing 63 previously unreleased tracks, is pitched against Beyond The Music: Her Complete RCA Victor Recordings, Etching The Voice: Emile Berliner And The First Commercial Gramophone Discs 1889-1895, Excavated Shellac: An Alternate History Of The World’s Music and key Prince influence Joni Mitchell Archives: The Early Years (1963-1967). The team cited in the nomination behind Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition is Prince, Trevor Guy, Michael Howe and Kirk Johnson for production, and Bernie Grundman the remastering. Historical Album in acknowledgement of repackaged albums has existed as a category since 1979. The original Sign O’ The Times album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2017.
The nomination follows that for 1999 Super Deluxe Edition in the same category in 2020. Prince won seven Grammys during his lifetime. The winner will be revealed at the Staples Center during the 64th Grammy Awards ceremony on 31 January 2022.
