For decades, a Prince star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been conspicuous by its absence, but 2025 will finally see Prince’s name added to the 2,782 stars that line the iconic stretch on Hollywood Boulevard.
The confirmation was made by The Time’s very own Jimmy Jam, speaking at a press conference at Ovation Hollywood to reveal the Class of 2025 approved to receive stars. Approval follows the settlement of the fee, currently $75,000 and typically paid by the studio or record label, to cover its installation as well as maintenance of the strip on Hollywood Boulevard that today stretches 1.3 miles.
It is understood that during his lifetime Prince was approached twice regarding his nominations but on each occasion declined the honour. The Hollywood Walk of Fame was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, whose rules impose a five year wait list following nomination, and allow only one star posthumously awarded per year. The nominees for 2025 were approved by the selection panel on 14 June, with Prince announced this year in the category of Recording. Other musicians to receive stars in 2025 include Depeche Mode, The B-52s and Busta Rhymes. Welcome 2 America Tour dancer, Misty Copeland, is also revealed to be receiving a star in 2025.
In a happy coincidence, the announcement came on the closing day of the annual Celebration hosted by The Prince Estate, which this year is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the movie and soundtrack Purple Rain. The installation ceremony of Prince’s star must take place within two years of the announcement. Dates are usually announced ten days prior to the ceremony.
There is no substitute for the real thing, but Prince left a legacy of thirty-nine studio albums, released 100 singles, as well as created many albums for other artists. Prince is one of the most prolific and successful songwriters in history.
