Website

lotusflow3r.com was Prince’s official website from 2009 to 2010. It was designed by Antony Malzone and built by Scott Addison Clay, the same team that earlier developed the websites for the movie franchise Batman and Planet Of The Apes. Launched on 31 January 2009 it displayed only a teaser page featuring a ticking time bomb. Full lotusflow3r.com was finally opened to subscribers as the bomb exploded in the early hours of 24 March 2009, to reveal a download service for Prince’s latest studio LPs LotusFlow3r and MPLSound along with Bria Valente’s Elixer album were available in both MP3 and WAV formats ahead of their physical commercial launch. Each album occupied its own part of the website’s three dimensional ‘galaxy’. On a technical level lotusflow3r.com was ahead of its time but troublesome to navigate and full of hidden Easter eggs. A spin-able globe containing long lost video clips was also available.

The physical release of the albums, sold as triple-disc digipak, followed 5 days after the website’s launch, albeit available only through an exclusivity arrangement with Target chain stores in the US – lotusflow3r.com therefore giving the ability for overseas fans to own copies of the albums albeit digitally. In addition to the album material, a trio of live recordings were uploaded that autumn as stand-alone MP3s, as well the full studio track Cause And Effect which was available within a month before the website’s closure.

Lotusflow3r.com remained open to members for exactly 365 days and with a one-time subscription fee of $77 under the sole purpose to distribute the three albums to fans. Despite hopes for the service continuing into a second year, the website closed on 23 March 2010. This would leave Prince without a website for the next three years. This long departure from the internet was in part out of fatigue with maintaining membership services and meeting expectations, but in the main acting on his growing distrust of internet caused piracy and how the digitisation of music in his view devalued music. On its closure, Prince sensationally declared “The internet is over” – a statement he sought to reign back on in later years.
